sweet february

As we approach the end of February it feels as though all we have done this month is scoff sweet stuff. Not so bad I suppose. After the loved-up chocs and sweeties from Valentines Day the sugar sprinkled highlight of the month has to be Pancake Day, or it’s more forgotten, original name - Shrove Tuesday!
Actually we have pancakes quite often for breakfast at the weekend. And as much as it is a ‘special treat’ for the kids, and they do still get super excited each time, it’s just so simple in both ingredients and method that I don’t know why we just don’t have them every morning............and then I remember!

love in a lunchbox

I had the idea yesterday to fill up the little ladies lunchbox with a veritable feast of valentine inspired treats.

Of course it was about 2am ish the night before that I had this idea and so had to make do with whatever I could find in the cupboards. I cut her sandwiches into hearts. Lucked out with a packet of mini Jammy Dodgers and found some decidedly heart shaped strawberries.

As I was excitedly scribbling a little valentines card for her I pondered at what age things like this go from adorably sweet to mildly embarrassing.

When will me doing things like this become an eyerolling irritation for her and invoke the teasing of her peers?

After much thought I decided probably not until she is about 23.

Have a loved up weekend x

who's wonder woman?

Last year there was a bit of a run on 'superhero' themed birthday parties that the little lady was invited to.
Obviously I made her a little superhero outfit. I asked her if she wanted to go as Wonder Woman { having gone through a surprisingly short list of female super heroes I could think of before drawing an absolute blank}.

"Who's Wonder Woman?" she asked.

I thought for a moment of how best to describe a 1970's cult tv show.

"Hhhhmmmm..." I replied "I think, deep down, we all are".

Yay. Well done me, for such a deep, philosophical message to send to my 3 year old daughter.

She thought for a moment, then answered,

"Can I go as a princess instead?"

To all Wonder Women {and princesses},
Happy International Women's Day!

hello new year

I baked a fair few cakes and pastries, made meringues aplenty, had a pretzel dough calamity but also a christmas pudding triumph {surprisingly}. I found treasures galore in the local charity shops and was heartbreakingly pipped to the post at buying a most splendid vintage dolls house {still not quite over it}. I made a lovely brides headdress for a lovely bride who had a very scandinavian wedding {more on that later} and I stitched together several costumes for the little lady of the house. I bought new cookery books and yet more sewing books and made a list of even more things I'll never get round to making...I made curtains and blinds {but not quite finished and still more to do} and put up pictures and filled shelves with nik naks and 'stuff'. I picked up the needle and the hook and actually finished some knittery bits and rather optimistically started some new ones. I finally crocheted together my modest pile of granny squares and found that I could just about follow 'The Killing' with one eye on the hook. I had lovely days out with my little family, come rain, wind or shine in Wisley, Kew, Whipsnade to name but a few. We holidayed in a very wet New Forest, flew a kite on a blustery windswept beach and all rather enjoyed Peppa Pig World! We drove north for a jubilant jubilee party and much closer to home, walked down to the river to cheer on Bradley Wiggins in the Olympic time trial. I started a 'Stitch Club' with friends and became just a little bit addicted to pinterest and recently joined instagram. But I still don't understand twitter or why everything has to start with a hashtag these days.............. Oh, and I had a new baby and we moved out of our house while we had a fairly substantial extension built................
But I've already mentioned the last two a few times I'm sure!

And I hardly blogged at all. Sometimes the real life stuff just happily gets in the way and sneakily steals away that time reserved for talking about said life stuff. And that is a good thing I reckon.

I have an invisible 'to do' list for 2013, the length of Dumbledores beard {I'm thinking more Richard Harris than Michael Gambon here}. And I'm really hoping I can get my blogging mojo back. But we'll see, I can only do what I can do....after feeding and watering the children there's usually very little of me left that can do any more than veg in front of Corrie.

So, sayonara 2012. It's been eventful to say the least.

How was your year? Are you ready for 2013?

Bon chance mes Amis.

A very Happy New Year to you all. x

what’s it all about.....

I’ve been rather busy and therefore just a bit absent from blogging for the past... {..gasp! Is it really that long...???} year or so!!
Yikes! It’s been all go, to say the least.
I could go on and on explaining all about the lack of internet that struck our home for a couple of months {very annoying} and then the subsequent break down of a slightly battered and peppa pig stickered ‘pooter’ and then the convoluted and slightly mind warping appeal we had to conjure up with regards to our building proposals that had been initially REJECTED!!! {Insert frowny face here}.
I’m sure you won’t be the slightest bit surprised to hear of my long list of unfinished projects.....I’m drowning in granny squares, have piles of cut out and ready to sew dress pattern pieces......and the usual ‘I’ve started but I probably won’t finish...’ knitting challenges.....
But no, I’m going to return to this wee blog with a little shout out to the one project I did get finished.
Ok, so it may have been two weeks late and made me really tired and possibly just a bit grumpy in the making, and I have a feeling I wasn’t particularly looking my best and the language was akin to that of a sailor on delivery of said project.
BUT....all that said, I think you’ll agree.....
It’s by far my best work to date....!

{Yes, we have a new little - almost 8 week old -  thimbles in our house! I have a brand spanking new ‘pooter’ and we have upped sticks while the builders turn our house into a little palace....in my head anyway!!}

Just to say a big thanks for all the emails and messages of ‘where are you?’. You’re all just so lovely to get in touch and ask after me. x

✴ hanging around, shooting the breeze...

The temperatures are soaring here. We've been getting rather hot under the collar, me and the little lady. So much so that it is actually quite nice to rest a while indoors and enjoy some shade, some quiet and have a bit of a cool down.

And so, I've been covering wire hangers with selvedge trim. As a 20 minute wind down {or wind around?} and the calming qualities of hanger covering are really quite surprising....honestly!
Give it a go...turn something destined for the dump into something Mr Morris would be proud of {practical and beautiful?}...

I used selvedge because I have piles of it and really, what else can you do with it? I also love the dual recycling purposes of the ugly wire hanger and the scruffy unloved selvedge, a perfect partnership, methinks!
But you could easily use ribbon or cotton tape. Just wrap it around the hanger, no need even to sew, I just wrapped a small piece of double sided sticky at the beginning and end of each piece. Job done.

Kirsty has got everyone hanger crazy!

✴ all around me...

China cups of tea on a ribbon strewn desk...
Liberty, lavender, love and luck...
Vintage milk glass earrings...{tick}
Hearts and kisses and little girl summer skirts...."Oo... like dat, mummy..."

Can't help but feel all pinky and peachy on this tropical and sun sparkled day. And all about my space are hints of Summer. I've also become smitten with the world of the podcast. To add to my old lady style I'm rather loving, Desert Island Discs, Gardeners' Question Time and, wait for it {and no, smug, "told you so" laughing, mum and dad...} The Archers!!!! Although I have no idea what on earth is going on I just snuggle in to the west country accents and 'trouble at mill' storylines.
And really, did David push Nigel off the roof..? Hhhmmmm........

✴ nothing but love

I've been caught up, bogged down and up to my eyeballs with this, that and a bit of the other...
I have issues with the real life versus creative life equilibrium and find myself always the first to blink during the daily stare contest with time. Curses! Doesn't time always have the last word on the subject!! Hate that! Why can't we all just get a few more hours in the day, I mean really, who came up with the 24 hour thing anyway!? Actually, the way things have been recently I'd probably use the extra hours to sleep so I'd be no better off and just as behind as I am now so there it is!
This is my poor excuse for my terrible absence from this blog.....again......
I like to think of myself as the Caroline Arless of the blogging world.....not drunk, in prison and with an enormous bottom... but, even though not always around and often found to be a bit unpredictable and unreliable, a little entertaining when she does turn up and cherished and forgiven by all the other Lark Risers...hopefully...
Speaking of which, I am still just a bit in love with last nights final episode and am not sure how I'm going to cope without my sunday dose of Lark Rise to Candleford.....perhaps I'll finally get to spend a bit more time here.....!
I promise to do a proper catch up but until then I wish you all a loved up, heart filled day, especially to my own special valentine and little valentine. x

✴ pumpkin head

This cold has taken over my weekend. Resulting in a bout of sinusitis which has been dreary beyond belief. It feels a lot like having a bowling ball for a head....or more aptly, a heavy pumpkin head.
I had to cancel a girly day out and resorted instead to a day in bed....made only slightly more bearable by a tankard of tea, a hot water bottle and the Cranford box set.....bliss! I could watch it again and again...actually I have....and will do again no doubt.
Lovely Mr H has entertained the little one all weekend and allowed me to rest and wallow. The cats, as usual did nothing to help....not even a cup of tea....lazy.
I'm not sure whether to feel relieved or saddened that there was only one small timid little trick or treat-esque type knock at the door.
The little one marveled at the pumpkin heads {or 'potatoes' as she likes to call them} and the simple cut out mice silhouettes from Martha were a triumph of wonderment and awe.
And we were so glad of the extra hour.
Happy All Hallows.

✴ my creative space

My creative space is below par today. With me and the little lady both coughing and sniffling ourselves through this beautifully sunny day there is little energy to get on with any of the numerous unfinished projects and ideas in the making....
As we are meeting to discuss our extension plans tomorrow it seems like a good idea for more sketching and measuring and thinking of what will go where and how...
In true 'me' style though I seem to have leapt straight from work in progress plans and scribblings to picking out colour schemes, fabrics, furniture and all that is pretty...

✴ accessorized

{snowheart silver earrings}
I love making pretty girly things like earrings, bracelets, scarves, bags, belts, etc...Perfectly lovely things to give as gifts or keep and wear over the festive period.
I made these silver earrings for a Canadian friend as a much belated birthday gift. I think I'll be making some more as gifts, the snowflake pattern is obviously just perfect for Christmas!
The stash of Liberty fabrics I recently ordered is now being made into tie belts with vintage buckles.
And some crochet with a notion for making wrist cuffs, which I'm still working out a pattern for.
{I'm finding the Mad Men box set perfect viewing for sewing/knitting/crocheting to}
Some good books for accessory inspiration;

✴ dough balls

On cold days indoors needing entertainment for my little teenage toddler there is no finer distraction for little fingers...umm..and big fingers.....than play dough.
Play dough is easy to make. My mum made it all the time for me and my sis and now I make it for Ella.
She loves it. Of course you're never going to distract a toddler for very, very long, but it just about keeps her quiet and creatively focused for me to have a breather. Although actually I usually spend that breather moulding and sculpting said play dough and then getting a bit carried away with my dough sculpture and imagining that the Tate might just call offering me exhibition space....
Finally, daydream broken, Ella grabs whatever I've been making and lobs it across the room. Children really are the harshest of critics.
Here is the recipe I use;
½ cup of plain flour
½ cup of water
¼ cup of table salt
1 tablespoon of cream of tartar
1 tablespoon of oil
food colouring
{double ingredients for a larger quantity of same coloured dough}
Mix the flour together with the tartar and salt in a saucepan {preferably old pan}
Add the water and mix until smooth.
Add a tsp of food colouring {or more if deeper colour required}
Then the oil and stir until combined
Put the pan over a medium heat and keep stirring until the dough comes together to form a ball.
Allow to cool, then play!

Keep dough in a zip lock or freezer bag and place in a box or tin to prolong it's life.
Play dough will dry out and it's highly likely that in a very short time, your lovely neat coloured dough balls will end up looking like this....
